Although North San Diego County has no formal boundaries, the communities of Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas-including Leucadia and Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Carmel Valley make up what is commonly known as Coastal North County. North County Inland includes of the cities of Vista, San Marcos, Rancho Santa Fe, Escondido, Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and Rancho Penasquitos.
Carlsbad, with a population of approximately 90,000, is located 35 miles north of San Diego. It boasts 7 miles of coastline and excellent year-round climate. Carlsbad is home to the world renowned La Costa Resort and Spa, the Four Seasons Resort, Legoland Amusement Park. Striving to maintain its enviable high quality life-style and support a strong local economy, Carlsbad carefully plans it's development. The city's award-winning growth management plan and long-term commitment to infrastructure have made Carlsbad a desirable location for new and expanding businesses.
The county's most northern city is also it's 3rd largest with a population of nearly 170,000. Oceanside's Pier and Harbor, along with some of the best beaches in the county, give it it's reputation of a lively beach community. Oceanside's business community is growing rapidly with new companies moving in and existing businesses expanding creating about 2000 new jobs per year.
Situated 25 miles north of San Diego on historic Highway 101, Encinitas is a city with multiple characteristics and identities. The communities of Leucadia, Cardiff, Olivenhain and Encinitas incorporated together as the City of Encinitas in 1986. With a combined population of 61,000, each of these communities takes pride in their own distinct personality. Public beaches are one of the cities largest attractions. Encinitas is known as the top surf town in the nation, and hosts many surf contests throughout the year. It is also a popular city for families who are attracted to the suburban lifestyle, new housing, and highly rated schools.
Vista's population has grown to 93,000, triple it's size since it was incorporated in 1963. It has historically been an agricultural area and even with it's fast-paced growth, has retained a rural atmosphere. In 1992, Vista was included as one of the "50 Best Places To Raise Your Family" Vista Village is the centerpiece redevelopment project for the City of Vista. The project is a multi-phased development of approximately 40 acres that will combine public amenities with private commercial development. The first phase opened in late 2003
Located 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean, San Marcos is one of the fastest growing communities in the county. With a population of 63,000, it encompasses 34 sqare miles of hills and valleys. San Marcos strives to be the hub of North County education. The opening and rapidly expanding California State University's San Marcos campus is the key to that effort. In addition to CSUSM, San Marcos is the home to Palomar Community College. San Marcos has also become well-known throughout North County for it's Old California Restaurant Row featuring Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, and Mexican cuisine, to name a few.
The most southern and smallest community of North County is the exclusive and upscale city of Del Mar. The city is home to a mere 4,500 residents occupying an area of just 2 square miles, Bordering Del Mar on the south is the Torrey Pine State Reserve, 2000 acres of San Diego County, preserved as it was before development began. The Del Mar Fairgrounds and racetrack are it's two biggest attractions, drawing thousands of people from all over California each year. |
